DALES: Project description

The objective of DALES is to develop a robust operational tool to enable the expected (reference condition) phytobenthos assemblage at any lake or loch site in Britain to be predicted, along with an assessment of ecological status.  Ecological status will be expressed as an Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR) showing deviation from the reference condition in a quantitative manner.  The method will be capable of determining five ecological status classes (as defined in the Water Framework Directive), based on the diatoms (as proxies of the entire phytobenthos).  The method will also state the probability with which each ecological status class can be assigned to a site.
